Interview with Wendy, Edgemont Resident

Transitioning to a new area can be quite a daunting task, but if it’s to the right place that move can seem seamless. I talked to Wendy, a new resident of Edgemont who moved there this past January, although she began tuitioning her son into Edgemont schools last September. Her main reason for moving to Edgemont: education. “It feels like your paying public for private.” She continued to elaborate claiming that her son was, “stimulated by the out of the box techniques of his elementary school teacher”. She talked about her need to get to a school system like Edgemont with their “rigorous allergy program”, which her son was in dire need of due to a terrible Peanut allergy. She said that she had looked at multiple school districts such as Rye, but none of them had quite the program that Edgemont had, and she stressed again that it’s as if her son is attending “private school”. As far as the community of her new town goes, Wendy had nothing but superlatives to say about it. “[Edgemont] has been supportive to open their arms to our situation with food allergies, and there is a strong sense of community here”. She said that she’s had past experiences in other towns, but this is one of, “the most diverse communities I’ve ever lived or worked in.” Another important aspect of the town to her was it’s proximity to New York City, “it’s easy to go into the city, and super close,” which made it very simple for her family to just take a weekend and visit it. However, she still maintained they were plenty of local places she enjoyed going to just as much, citing Oakland Beach and Rye Playland as some of her favorite attractions, as well as La Catena and Golden Wok as some of her favorite restaurants. The move was necessary and crucial for her son, but it seems as if they have been enjoying it all parts of Edgemont. If someone is in a similar situation with not getting the medical attention they need, I would think that Edgemont should definitely be a place on their radar.
